Defiant Behavior in Public

By Anthony Kane, Md of Complete Connection Parenting

Here, we shall focus on what parents can do in instances when their children display defiant behavior in public. I know that many parents tend to feel embarrassed when their child creates a scene in a public place owing to all the unwarranted attention.

If you, as a parent get stuck in a in situation like this, it is normal for you to start thinking all eyes are on you and everyone around you are surely thinking you should know how to control your child’s behavior. But step back for a second. Clear that out of your head. No matter who might be watching you, try to maintain your focus, it is of the utmost importance. Your child needs you.

Most acts of defiant behavior in public have an underlying message. Fundamentally, when your child creates a scene, he is trying to tell you something. Maybe he’s hungry or maybe he needs help getting out of something he cannot handle.

Even if you do feel a hundred eyes staring at you, retaining your focus is necessary. It is important that you interpret the needs of your child as soon as possible.

Address the issue at hand even if it’s as simple as hunger, or the need to get out of a jam, or your unwavering attention.

So, at the next instance of your child displaying defiant behavior in public, first try and identify the problem.

What the people around you might be thinking shouldn’t really be given any importance. Remember, the needs of your child come first.
