Effective Parenting: Win-Win Discipline
By Anthony Kane, Md of Complete Connection Parenting
Hey, baseball is a great sport, but if you find your kid cursing because he's not winning, you can turn his favorite sport into some win-win discipline and hit a home run with some effective parenting. Ouch! Was that too many baseball clichés? Well keep reading and together we'll hit it out of the park. (I know, I know!) First of all, cursing is unacceptable whether on the baseball diamond or at your supper table. Your son has to know this and know that there will be consequences if he breaks the rules. That's a winning strategy that needs to be playing in his mind. No swearing or he doesn't get to finish the game. Or he has to apologize to the coach and the other players. Whatever your decide the consequence is to be, just make sure that it makes sense in terms of the swearing. Don't take away his iPod if he swears at his baseball game. That's only making it to second base. It's a start but it doesn't count for anything. Why not? Because there is no connection between the swearing and iPod. To really bring it home and make the point with your son, make sure the consequence you give him is reflective of the misdeed. He needs a game plan in his head that says if he swears, he sits out the game. That's a logical connection. Listen, if you just give him punishments all the time, he sees his misbehavior as a chance to get away with something. He's thinking, last time I swore I just lost the computer for an hour. And maybe it's a risk he's willing to take. And maybe you'll punt and give him another wimpy punishment. Or maybe you'll try to crowd the plate and give him a zinger so he doesn't forget. In either cases, punishments are wrong because you can't link the computer with swearing. Keep your eye on the ball and don't give punishments. Give consequences instead. This award winning strategy is tried and true. I've worked with parents for 6 years honing my own parenting skills and finally I've produced a homerun video that will have cheering in your seat. It's a simple and short video that will show you the most common mistake parents make when using consequences. It's your turn at bat. Check out my free video at http://ccparenting.com/discipline?10086. You'll learn a win-win discipline strategy for effective parenting. Then your kid cursing at this baseball games will be like last season's scores, non-existent. |
